The local economy is typically agricultural. Corn crops, fruit and vegetables are traditionally grown. There is also small private farm livestock breeding. There are no local industrial polluters, which renders the local arable land of high quality. Local capacity for new processing facility construction however remains under-developed.

Stable decreasing population trend posts a major problem for municipal administration. In 2005, municipal administration implemented projects aimed at the reconstruction of water sewage system; of various road sections; and of local mayor's and community centers' buildings. A children's playground was built in the village of Vassil Levski as well. The street lights in all residential areas were also reconstructed. The municipal administration holds a significant building capacity fund, suitable for new industrial activity. The administration also holds ownership over a number of construction land lots located near major transport roadways. The construction of Trakia motorway will further boost local economic development.
With the highest net sales revenue earned among companies in the municipality of Opan that reported activity in 2004 are Mital EOOD and AMK - 2002 OOD. With the highest profit earned in 2004 are Teramis - Snezhana Ivanova, Zaprianovs OOD, Mitak EOOD, and Avandira Agro OOD.
