326 companies reported activity in 2004 in the Municipality of Galabovo. The total output produced in 2004 is 415.92mn BGN. Total net sales revenue earned in 2004 is 446.05mn BGN, up 40% year-on-year (318.59mn BGN net sales revenues reported in 2004). Two of the coal mining pits of Maritsa-East Mining EAD as well as two thermal power plants and a briquette producing plant are all situated in the Municipality of Galabovo. Coal mining and power energy and briquette production are therefore major employment for local residents. There are 1,100 people currently working in Brikel EAD. The company has reported production of 365,000 tonnes of briquettes and 1bn kWph power production in 2004, while in 2005 alone the production has grown by 10% year-on-year.
The rehabilitation works at TPP Maritsa-East 3, worth EUR 600mn, were completed in 2005 with the launch of power unit II, having output capacity of 227 MW. After the rehabilitation, 64 MW of extra power capacity will be added to the capacities of the four power units at TPP Maritsa-East 3 (having 840 MW power capacity so far), while their life expectancy will be extended by 15 years.
In 2006, a new thermal power plant will be launched construction, with the estimated new investment at the old TPP 1 totalling EUR 1bn.
As of early 2005, employed labour in the municipality totalled 7,641 people (7.1% of the regional total). Average public-sector annual salary in 2004 was 6,797 BGN, while an estimated 5,100 BGN in private sector with 4,961 people working in the sector (64.9% of total employed).
Municipal Development Plan 2007-2013 envisages the following development priorities:
· New growth opportunities for small and medium business through the creation of conditions suitable for business development and promotion of entrepreneurship and business skills
· Improvement of living conditions by securing a cleaner environment, better health care, higher quality of education and public culture, an increased number of green areas and sports facilities in residential areas
· Further growth of the coal mining and power energy industry
In 2005, the municipal administration implemented three projects for creation of new public green fields funded by EPAME. New project financing is pending approval for renovation of the Stroitel housing complex in Galabovo, for the introduction of a separated waste disposal system, and for the construction of water sewage system in Galabovo.
Rehabilitation of public schools in the municipality was implemented in 2005, the project being jointly funded by the Municipality of Galabovo and TPP Maritsa-East 3. A new shopping street in Galabovo was also opened in 2005. Reconstruction and replacement of street light are pending implementation in 2006.
With the highest net sales revenue earned among companies in the municipality that reported activity in 2004 are Maritsa-East 3 Energy Company, Brikel EAD, Maritsa-East 3 Operating Company, Energoremont - Galabovo and Euro oil OOD. The first three companies are ranked top also in terms of the highest profit earned, followed by Energy Export-Import OOD and Tabakov - Assen Chaushev ET.
